The Chilhowie Baptist Association
Baptist and Reflector newspaper, 1900
This Association lies in East Tennessee, just across the river from Knoxville, and includes the Third Baptist Church of Knoxville. It met on August 23rd at the Island Home Church, two miles from Knoxville. Bro. R. A. Brown was elected Moderator, Bro. J. L. McCamy Clerk and Bro. Wm. Nuckols Treasurer. The introductory sermon was preached by Rev. O. C. Peyton from John xiv.12. It was one of the finest sermons we have heard in a long time. Bro. Peyton has just resigned the church at Maryville and accepted a call to Howell Memorial Church, West Nashville. We congratulate Nashville upon securing him.

Bro. R. A. Brown, as Chairman of the Executive Board, made a most excellent report. Dr. Holt said that it was the best resort of an Executive Board that he had ever heard. For several months the pastors of the Association have been engaged in what they call a missionary campaign among the churches of the Association, which resulted in giving quite a stimulus to the missionary interests of the churches and in quickening them into a more active sympathy with our denominational work. We understand that the pastors of Holston Association are arranging for a similar campaign in that Association. We hope that the brethren of every Association in the State will have such a campaign. The Association resolved to try to raise $800 for missions next year.

The speech of President Henderson on Education was one of the best we have ever heard, even from him. Professors W. M. Rogers of Chilhowle institute and W. R. Bryan of Holbrook Normal College also made excellent speeches on the subject. The Association decided to try to raise $1,500 next year for education, to be divided equally between Carson and Newman College and Chilhowle Institute. This is to be in addition to their regular contributions for other purposes. We hope they will succeed in raising it. They can easily do so, if they will try.

      The following ministers In the Association were in attendance upon the meeting: J. M. Anderson, J. R. Coulter, J. R. Dykes, W. H. Hodges, L. H. Maples, R. M. Murrell, O. C. Peyton, E. L. Titsworth.

      The visiting brethren were as follows: W. R. Bryan, Peter Gninn (col). Dr. J. D. Henderson, J. T. Henderson, S. P. Hennard, A. J. Holt, J. M. Phillips and U. S. Thomas.

The editor preached on Thursday night. On Friday night a meeting was held in the interest of the B.Y.P.U. Dr. J. M. Phillips preached on Sunday morning. We regretted that we were compelled to leave before the adjournment of the Association.

The choir of the Island Home Church, under the direction of Bro. R. A. Brown, who is a member of that church, furnished inspiring music. We are indebted to Pastor J. M. Anderson for numerous courtesies. He has received a call to the church at Newport, and the Island Home Church is in trepidation lest they may lose him. He is one of the best preachers in East Tennessee, which means that he is one of the best in the State.

Our home was with Bro. J. R. Gilbert. We appreciate very much the kind hospitality of himself and his good wife, as also that of Bro. and Sister R. M. Murrell, which we had the pleasure of sharing.
