PROF. DANFORD THOMAS, LL.D.
IN MEMORIAM

Born September 20, 1817. - Died May 17, 1882.

Brother Thomas was appointed to the chair of Ancient Languages and Literature in Georgetown College, in 1839, which position he filled till his death - during a period of forty-three years.

Prof. Thomas was a thorough scholar, a successful teacher, an active Christian, and an ardent friend and supporter of all our benevolent institutions.

In 1840, he united, by letter, with the Baptist Church in Georgetown, becoming, at once, a teacher in its Sunday-school, and was for many years, its Superintendent. For thirty years he was a deacon in the church, and was always selected as one of her delegates to this Association. At the time of his death he was a Trustee of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville. Thus has his death created vacancies in the College, in the Church, in the Sunday-school, in this Association, which we can hardly hope to see filled by any successor.

The two brethren whose departure from our midst we are called upon to deplore, were warm personal friends and co-workers in the Master's vineyard. For five years they were associate professors in College. Their last meeting on Earth was in the Elkhorn Sunday-school Convention at Georgetown; in the deliberations of which both took an active part. In a few weeks they were called home to enter upon that inheritance, which shall never pass away.
