Elder J. F. R. Mays
The Tennessee Baptists, 1884
It has been announced in the newspapers this noble brother has passed away recently - having died in February last in the State of Florida.

Thinking that his friends, would like to know something more about the announcement of the fact, I thought I would give a short sketch of his life as found in "Borum's Sketches," to which he would refer the reader for a more extensive notice: He was born In Surry county. N. C. April 4, 1827. He united with the Reformers at the age of eighteen years, but soon became dissatisfied with their tenants and united with the Baptist church at Lexington, Va., January 1, 1853, in 1854 went to South Carolina where he was employed as a missionary for the Union Association; in February, 1855, he entered Union University as a tutor; in 1856, he became a theological student under Dr. Boyce.

He finished his course of study at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary at Columbia, S. C., and was ordained the same year by the Baptist church in Greenville, S. C.

He married Sarah R. Durham, January 10, 1860, a niece of the late Eld. Elias Dodson. He acted in various capacities at different times for the cause of Christ; was agent for the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and rode as agent for the Beulah Association, N.C., in which he achieved abundant success. He also held many successful protracted meetings in different places, and in the camps of the Confederate army.

He was called to serve the Jackson church, Madison county, Tenn., for five and half years, which grew from fifty-two to two hundred fifty, and left it in good condition. He married the second time Mrs. Mattie J. Shepherd, of Knoxville, Tenn., August 31, 1876. He was an active and efficient minister of Christ. Peace be to his ashes.
