INTRODUCTION

Belleview Baptist's Hidden Treasure: The Church Minutes, 1803-1914
Book l

Few churches over a hundred years old possess copies of the records of their business meetings dating from the first moments of their existence as an organization. Fewer still actually have the original documents in anything approaching readable condition. Belleview Baptist is blessed to have both, and they truly are rare works of art.

The first book, containing entries from the day of constituting in March 1803 to June, 1827, is in remarkable condition, looking as though it might have been written fifty or a hundred years ago. Since the steel ink pen wasn't introduced until the 1830's, the entries would have been made with a sharpened quill pen dipped repeatedly in a bottle of ink or inkwell, certainly a messy, tedious, error-prone business. Frequent, smudges, drips and strike-overs on the pages give testimony to just how far the art of written communication has come in two hundred years.

Despite numerous errors and mis-strokes, however, the early church clerks (Moses Scott, Elijah Hogan, William Garnett, John Hawkins, and John Brady) created a document of rare beauty and originality. The ink, seasoned over two centuries, glows golden-bronze on each ivory page. The calligraphy is full of swirls, flourishes and characters that few modern hands can imitate.

The language is quaint, full of odd spellings, obsolete grammatical and usage forms as well as old words, forms, and characters. One obsolete character used continually in the minutes is the slanted, superscript (or flying) d - sometimes with a period beneath - at the end of past tense verbs to create a contraction, replacing the standard - ed. Another is the use of fs to indicate a double-s, a holdover from 18th century British script, as in the words drefsed, dismifs, afsociation, and mefsengers. Numerous contractions, such as afsd. (aforesaid), viz. (that is, namely), recd (received), and sd. (said), rarely seen today outside of legal documents, are commonplace in the old records.

From among the musty pages, covered with charming (and sometimes humorous) accounts from a bygone era, emerge glimpses of the people who lived in old Boone County and founded the Church of Christ at Middle Creek. Ocasionally vain and petty, most often sincere and devout, always intensely human, these are our forefathers and mothers. For better or for worse, they were God's people striving to do His will, as best they could.

NOTE: No attempt has been made by the transcriber to edit or correct the minutes in any way. They appear as closely as the modern keyboard will allow to what was originally written. Transcriber's notes and comments appear in brackets.
