Maude Elizabeth Kemp
Faithful Baptist Lady

Maude Elizabeth Sanders was born on 22 June 1903, in Logan County, Kentucky. Her father, James Thomas Sanders, was 22 and her mother, Sammie Lewis, was 23 when she was born. On December 26, 1923, in Clarksville, Tennessee, she married Edwin Owen DuBerry. They lived in the Olmstead, Kentucky community. They had two children, Maxine duBarry in 1925 and Adrian duBarry in 1928. A few years later, her husband Edwin abandoned the family, leaving her to raise two children on her own. After her divorce from Edwin for abandonment, Maude married Roy Kemp on March 27, 1937. They had one daughter, Annette Kemp, in 1938. She had six grandsons.

She began teaching elementary school in one room schoolhouses early in her adult life. Her teaching career of 49 years was primarily in Kentucky, but she did teach for a few years in southeast Missouri. She joined Olmstead Baptist Church in September 1957, the month after the church was constituted. She was a faithful member of the church for many years teaching the adult women’s class and leading women’s prayer groups. She was always hospitable to preachers and their families, hosting them for meals in her home from time to time. She died on September 11, 2000, at the age of 97, and is buried in the Dripping Spring Cemetery in Olmstead, Kentucky.
