William Arthur
Early Irish/American Baptist Minister
1796 - 1875

      William Arthur was an immigrant Baptist preacher in the nineteenth century. Born in Ireland, he emigrated to Canada as a young man. In 1821, he married Malvina Stone, and they had 9 children, with Chester being their fifth child. William Arthur became a Baptist preacher in 1828 and pastored 11 churches in Vermont and New York border areas in the years following, while Chester, his oldest son, was young. A committed abolitionist, he was also a co-founder of the New York Antislavery Society. His son became the 21st United States President - Chester A. Arthur.
