Jesse B. Thomas D.D.
The Christian Repository, 1888

Jesse B. Thomas, D.D., so long the efficient and useful pastor of the First Church, Brooklyn, N. Y., has been forced to resign this high position, and, indeed, to give np preaching for a time, on account of an affection of the throat.

He was born in Illinois, not very far from St. Louis, in 1832. His father was Judge of the Supreme Court of that State. After graduating at Kingston College, Ohio, he studied law, and was admitted to the Bar in Illinois, in 1855. But he felt it his duty to preach, and entered Rochester Theological Seminary, having to leave it, however, on account of his health. In 1862, he gave himself fully to the work of the ministry, and after a brief pastorate in the little town of Wankegan, Illinois, he was called to the Pierrepont Baptist Church, Brooklyn. After pastorates in California and Chicago, he took charge of the First Church, Brooklyn, in 1874. He has been successful, beloved and honored by his brethren, both of this church and of the whole denomination. He is a fearless Gospel preacher, a decided Baptist, and a vigorous, able writer. May the Lord restore him to health and to the work of the ministry.
