Editor's note: Robert Robinson's The History of Baptism was originally published in London, England in 1790. David Benedict edited the book and re-published it in Boston in 1817. There were approximately 2,000 subscriptions to this new edition (pp. 551-566).
Mr. Benedict says:"About one thousand of the subscribers in the New-England and Middle States were obtained by Mr. George Dods, of Providence, who wishes in this public manner to acknowledge the distinguished kindness and hospitality of the brethren and friends among whom he has travelled, and by whom he has so often been refreshed and comforted. It will be noted that there was a real interest in the importance of baptism among Baptists throughout our nation in the early nineteenth century. The records indicate that Jesse Mercer of Greene County, Georgia ordered 50 copies of the book and Mr. William King of Nelson County, Kentucky ordered 32 copies. Several individuals ordered twenty or more copies. The following list is for the state of Kentucky. - RI added 8.2.07 - NH, VT, MD, DL, VA added 9.28.07 - Jim Duvall"Mr. Ebenezer Ide, who obtained a large number of subscribers in the Western States, had, when last heard from, 160 names, which have not arrived in season for insertion. Probably some lists from other quarters may also have failed of reaching the Publishers." (p. 566)
