First Baptist Church
Clarksville, Missouri

     Organized January 22, 1874, the records give Rev. J. D. Biggs, A. G. Mitchell, S. W. Marston as the ministers on the occasion. The constituting members were: James Major, W. D. Major, Kate Major, B. F. Yates, Margaret Yates, G. W. Pendleton, Susan Pendleton, S. A. Edwards, Mary J. Edwards, Emily Limerick, C. C. Runkel, Mary Runkel, Martha Berry, Theodore Berry, W. H. Bibb, Martha J. Bibb, Elizabeth Beamer, Jethro Ferrell, Elizabeth Ferrell, Maducia Edwards, W. H. Nicklin. The church worshiped in the Presbyterian and also Methodist churches. A house was erected in 1876 and dedicated by Rev. M. H. Pogson, April, 1877. Size of building is forty-two by fifty-four feet, built of brick, conveniently located on Main street, and carpeted and comfortably furnished.

     W. D. Major was for years the clerk and he was also the beloved superintendent of Sabbath school. He and his family were staunch supporters of the organization. The first Deacons were S. A. Edwards, B. F. Yates and W. D. Major. The Pastors have been: W. H. Bibb, first supply; W. H. Burnham, 1875 -1880; J. B. English, 1880-1881; D. W. Morgan, 1881-1883; W. M. Tipton, 1883 -1886; J. D. Hacker, December, 1886 - April, 1888; J. F. Kemper, August, 1886 - January, 1890; Charles A. Mitchell, supplying meantime; W. H. Stone, November, 1890 to 1891; J. D. Hacker, June, 1892 - October, 1892; W. M. Tipton,

May, 1893 - May, 1895; W. H. Stone, July, 1896 - June, 1899; J. T. Nevins, March, 1900 - August, 1901; J. D. Biggs, May, 1902 - May, 1906; M. E. Broaddus, May, 1907 - George H. Ferrel is church clerk. The Deacons are Charles Middleton, J. E. Riggins and G. H. Ferrel.

     The officers Baptist Ladies Aid Society are: Mrs. Charles Middleton, president; Mrs. Edward Wigginton, vice-president; Mrs. J. H. Story, secretary and treasurer.

     Sunday school officers: J. E. Riggins, superintendent; Mrs. J. H. Story, assistant superintendent; Miss Lily Young, secretary and treasurer; Miss Lillian Riggins, organist.

     The present membership is sixty.
