David Macrae Scottish Baptist Minister David Macrae graduated from Aberdeen, joined the Independents following James Haldane's visit to the North. In 1801 he preached along the Moray Forth coast as far as Avoch in his native Black Isle. Advised that he would command greater attention if he became a minister, he visited Huntley where he was ordained by George Cowie. Returning to Avoch, he was the means of forming an Independent church but was soon faced with the question of baptism. In 1805 after accepting Baptist views he published A View of the Old and New Way, a fairly substantial volume setting out the principals and organisation of a Baptist church. At this period he was instumental in forming a Baptist church at Fortrose, in the days of ferries an important place on the way north. The Edinburgh Scoth Baptists provided financial support, which he supplimented by opening a school in Iverness. He returned to Edinburgh in 1812.
