Georgetown College

to advance which Rockwood Giddings gave his life, is located at Georgetown, Scott County, Ky., the first Baptist college West of the Alleghanies and South of the Potomac, and the fifth oldest Baptist institution for higher education in America, was chartered by the Kentucky Legislature in 1829. Dr. William Stoughton was elected president, but died before reaching Georgetown.

      In June, 1830, Dr. Joel S. Bacon was elected President. For two years he had litigation with the Reformers, who were trying to get possession of the college. In 1832 he resigned and the presidency was vacant for four years.

      In 1836 Elder B. F. Farnsworth was appointed, but he resigned in two months on account of the pending controversy.

      In 1838, Rockwood Giddings was elected, he died in 1839, and in 1840 Dr. Howard Malcomb was elected president. He served with great success for ten years.

      In 1850 Dr. J. S. Reynolds became president; he was succeeded in 1853 by Dr. Duncan R. Campbell, who died in 1865, and Dr. Nathaniel Macon Crawford was chosen president. He resigned in 1870, and Dr. Basil Manley [jr.] was elected president. He resigned in 1880, and Dr. R. M. Dudley was made president.

      In 1893 Dr. A. C. Davidson was chosen president.

      About 3,000 young men have been educated at Georgetown, of whom 300 are ministers of the Gospel.
