A Baptist Missionary to California
Has just been appointed [1849] by the American Baptist Home Mission Society and he has accepted the appointment. Rev. O. C. Wheeler, pastor of the Union Baptist church, in Jersey City, is the person. Bro. Wheeler is an earnest, warm-hearted man, liberally educated, a good speaker, and heartily devoted to the work of the ministry. We think the Society very fortunate in obtaining so good a man to go, with his family, to that far-off land to contend with irreligion and error and all kinds of opposition. It is fortunate for that country that the attention of several denominations has been attracted to it and that so early in its history a stated ministry is to be established. The American Home Mission Society has already commissioned one missionary, and the Episcopal Society will send out two.
