INDEX TO THE KENTUCKY BAPTIST HERITAGE

The index which accompanies this explanatory page is a general index to materials which have appeared in The Kentucky Baptist Heritage from the beginning of publication (Special Issue dated December, 1970) through the last issue received (November, 1987). In most cases each article has been indexed by author and one main subject; no attempt has been made to index every name, place, and minor subjects mentioned in the articles. An exhaustive imex would be very valuable, but the preparation of such would require much time and patience, some knowledge of and interest in Kentucky Baptist history, and an available computer!

This index has been prepared for the use of one researcher. Should anyone else wish to use the index, please note these explanations:

1. Issue numbers. For volume one, issue numbers were included through Issue Number 3. Issue numbers were not resumed until volume two, issue one. For the sake of consistency, issue numbers have been assigned for the unnumbered issues of volume one.

2. Page numbers. In volume one, the issue dated June 15, 1971 is stated to begin on page 40; however, the preceding issue dated May 15, 1971 is stated to end on page 40. Since both of these statements cannot be correct, and since the pages are not numbered at this point in the publication, the page references for the articles will vary by one page in the June 15, 1971 issue depending upon the starting page of the issue. Also in volune one, the last issue (dated December is, 1971) is stated to cover pages 79-84. However, the last numbered page of the issue is 83, but the page preceding the last page is not unnbered. Attention is called also to the fact that some issues have introductory pages numbered with Roman numerals.

3. Subject headings. Since nearly all of the articles relate to some phase of Kentucky Baptist history, the headings "Baptist" and "Kentucky Baptist" have been used sparingly. A few general articles have been placed under the subject "Baptists". "Kentucky" has been used as a subject heading only for official. names of bodies, e.g. Kentucky Baptist Convention, and Kentucky Baptist Historical Commission/Society.

4. Proper names which appear in the index are authors of articles unless the word "about" follows the name; in these cases the person is the subject of the article.

Since this index is the work of one person, it is not difficult to assign responsibility for all errors. Perhaps the shortcomings of this research tool will inspire someone to develop a more adequate index for the important materials to be found in The Kentucky Baptist Heritage.
